Schedule A Visit
At Stela Psychiatry, we understand that seeking mental health support can bring many questions. Below are answers to the most common questions we receive.
I serve adults over 18, and each person must contact me themselves. Please don’t have a family member contact me.
I am out of network with all commercial insurances, including Medicaid and Medicare. A valid credit card on file is required for all patients. We can provide a superbill, which you can submit to your insurance for out-of-network benefits. If you are planning to seek reimbursement, I strongly encourage you to contact your insurance carrier to find out about your out-of-network benefits for diagnostic codes 90792, 99215, and 99214 so that you can anticipate your out-of-pocket expenses prior to scheduling an appointment. Payment is due at the time of service.
If you are a new patient, please see our online intake form. For existing patients, you can use our patient portal.
Long-term use of benzodiazepines is neither safe nor recommended. I do prescribe them, but my goal is to have your anxiety improved so you no longer need benzodiazepines or only very occasionally. If you are on a very high dose, I will likely taper the dose down.
I do not take over prescribing these when other doctors refuse to prescribe. This practice prefers not to prescribe the chronic use of alprazolam (Xanax), which is extremely addictive. If obtaining a prescription for Xanax is your main reason for seeing a physician, please seek that care from another provider. Thank you for your understanding.
Yes, I do prescribe stimulants, which are medications used for ADHD. If you have been previously prescribed by another provider, I require a copy of any testing done to make this diagnosis. If you wish to be evaluated for ADHD, I can recommend places where you can obtain testing.
I do not see anyone for disability evaluations. Paperwork and forms for disability, FMLA or work leave are generally only completed once care has been established for a minimum of 6 months. I understand symptoms worsen, but my goal is to have you improved and functioning so you do not need disability.
A psychiatrist is a physician. Psychiatrists have completed four years of undergraduate studies, four years of medical school, and four or more years of residency and fellowship, consisting of over 20,000 hours of training.
Board certification requires a comprehensive exam in psychiatry and neurology and annual continuing medical education in each area of expertise, along with ongoing assessments of knowledge that are rigorous and must be completed in three-year blocks of time.
